Franz Walter Bergmann (1898–1977) was an Austrian-American painter, muralist, and enamellist who made his mark in California. Born in Dimling, Austria, he studied at the Vienna National Academy of Art before immigrating to the U.S., where he worked in New York and Chicago and later settled in San Francisco in 1929. He painted murals for landmarks like the Sir Francis Drake Hotel and the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition, taught at the California School of Fine Arts, and illustrated children’s books. Later in life, he turned to enameling full-time, becoming a prominent craft artist, and eventually retired to travel with his wife before passing away in Sonoma County.
